Strategic communications within many large, global organizations, is key. A study by executive search firm Spencer Stuart and PR Firm Weber Shandwick with KRC Research shows the majority (58%) of chief communications officers (CCOs) now report directly to CEOs. And social media is the hype: CCOs cite social media/blogging as the most frequently added function and believe that social media/blogging will be their most important tool in 2009.

The results of the Harvard Business study on Twitter has raised some questions if the micro-blogging service is just some trend for social media freaks. According to Techcrunch, on Twitter there are 80% of accounts having fewer than 10 followers – based on an analysis of seven million Twitter accounts provided to TechCrunch by Web security firm Purewire (which operates TweetGrade).

Accounts with 0 followers: 29.4%
Accounts with 1 to 9 followers: 50.9%
Accounts with 10 or more followers: 19.7%

Accounts following 0 people: 24.4%
Accounts following 1 to 9 people: 43.4%
Accounts following 10 or more people: 32.2%
