Web 3.0 – Kate Ray interviews web experts

This is a fascinating film story about the Semantic Web. Student Kate Ray is a journalism/psych major and has done some excellent interviews with the web experts: Tim Berners-Lee, Clay Shirky, Chris Dixon, David Weinberger, Nova Spivack, Jason Shellen, Lee Feigenbaum, John Hebeler, Alon Halevy, David Karger and Abraham Bernstein.

The short film gives us insights in what the Semantic Web is, the technology behind it, and how much it will influence our use of the internet.

The main take-away for me is Clay Shirky’s message. Having been in the news business for years (and still feel like being in one…), I can only agree with his point of view…

„If I was going to start a news business tomorrow, I would start a new business designed not to produce one bit of news but instead to aggregate news for individuals in ways that matter to them.“

The video makes clear that there is more than enough content producers in the world. Definitely more content exists than human kind will ever be able to read. The new value for media consumption will be providers that are saving time for individuals as well as for business professionals.

Yesterday, I wrote to an event company: „Time is the gold of the future!“. And the way I understand Clay’s words, we are heading in this direction. The world needs to find ways to make a combination of an aggregation and productive vision happen. Microsoft is working on Spindex, tools like Netvibes, Noserub and the likes could become such aggregation providers.

Is this the right way to look at the future? Or is it more the hybrid model of man and mashine like the personal web manager vision that we need? Which other formats can you imagine? Share your views…
